What Is Telemedicine / Telepsychiatry?
Telemedicine is the delivery of clinical health care over the phone or through video chat. Telepsychiatry is the application of telemedicine in the field of psychiatry. With telepsychiatry, patients can speak with high-quality certified psychiatrists about their psychiatric disorders and addictions and receive treatment. This is especially useful in areas where psychiatrists are hard to reach.
Telemedicine has been practiced in some form for many decades. At The Psychiatry Group, we take pride in providing real-time telemedicine services in the behavioral health field, serving both individual patients and healthcare agencies. Below, we answer some common questions about the telepsychiatry experience. If you have any further questions or are interested in scheduling an appointment, please contact us.
Will I see my doctor on Skype®?
While Skype® provides a very popular and robust platform for video communication, we have partnered with Citrix to provide secure and HIPAA compliant platform for communicating, which can be used on computers as well as portable devices including tablets and smartphones. Modern compression techniques allow optimal use of limited bandwidth internet connections. Secured communications use data scrambling technology to render the information useless to someone who manages to hack into information systems.
What should I expect during this visit?
You will be checked-in in your doctor’s office, and then you will be seen by a provider. The provider will see you in a private space where the screen is setup. You can have an interpreter available should you need one. In other words, your visit would be very similar to your regular doctor visits.
Can I see the doctor if I have an emergency or crisis?
Probably, but your office will explain to you what your options are. Please call 911 if this is a life-threatening emergency.
What if I do not like the experience?
We hope we can make you comfortable, but you are free to walk out and let the staff know that you do not want to continue. This visit, in most cases, is voluntary and not mandated.
Is my information safe?
Our data communications utilize the best available technologies to ensure information security. Our providers and staff are trained in HIPAA and take every precaution to ensure your data remains safe and secure.
